In the south of Morocco, on the dry hills near the Atlantic coast, cactus fruit ripens under a hard sun. Inside each fruit are tiny seeds, and inside those seeds is one of the rarest oils in the world. Women in the region have used it for generations to protect their hair from sun, wind and dust. Today, prickly pear oil for hair is one of the most sought-after natural beauty oils. Here is why, and how to make it part of your routine.
What is prickly pear seed oil?
Prickly pear seed oil (also called barbary fig oil) is pressed from the seeds of the Opuntia cactus fruit. The seeds are tiny and hold very little oil, so it takes close to a thousand kilograms of fruit to make a single liter. That is what makes it so precious, and why it is often called Morocco’s “desert gold”.
The oil is light, golden and absorbs quickly. It is naturally rich in fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, and in vitamin E. That combination is what makes it so appreciated for hair care.
5 benefits of prickly pear oil for hair:
- Deep nourishment without the weight. Unlike heavier oils, prickly pear oil sinks in quickly. It nourishes dry lengths without leaving hair greasy or flat, which makes it a good match for fine hair.
- Softer, smoother strands. Its fatty acids help smooth the hair surface. Hair feels softer, looks glossier and is easier to comb.
- Less visible frizz. A few drops on dry ends help tame flyaways and frizz, especially in humid weather.
- A comfortable scalp. Massaged into the scalp, the oil helps relieve the feeling of dryness and tightness.
- Protection for dry, sun-exposed hair. Vitamin E is an antioxidant. Used regularly, the oil helps keep hair looking healthy after sun, wind and heat styling.
How to use prickly pear oil in your hair routine
As a finishing serum (every day). Warm 2 to 3 drops between your palms and smooth them over dry or damp lengths and ends. Avoid the roots if your hair is fine.
As a pre-wash scalp treatment (once a week). Massage a few drops into your scalp and lengths 30 minutes before shampooing. Then wash as usual with a gentle shampoo like our Marrakesh Mint Shampoo.
Before heat styling. Apply a drop or two to damp hair before blow-drying. Pair it with a low-frizz dryer such as our Ionic Professional Hair Dryer for smoother results.
On curls. Layer one or two drops over your curl cream to seal in moisture and add shine.
Which hair types is it for?
Prickly pear oil suits almost every hair type. Dry, frizzy, curly and color-treated hair benefit most from its nourishment, and fine hair likes it because it stays light. If your scalp is oily, keep the oil on your lengths and ends.
